Party on a Whim

Images: Pinterest

As I write this post, I'm envisioning a dear friend on the West Coast effortlessly putting together a last minute New Year's Eve party for 16. Her phone call last night was filled with breathless excitement as she explained to me that at dinner that evening, she and her husband lamented at the fact they had decided months ago to have a quiet evening alone on December 31, something they hadn't done in years. See, they are the consummate party-givers. The could run rings around most event planners. They both have high-powered, ultra high stress jobs and children still living at home yet they are the masters at entertaining. Their specialty? The last minute soiree.

It's truly remarkable to attend one of their swanky events and hear them nonchalantly mention that they decided to invite everyone over that very morning. A casual get-together is one thing but a festive end-of-year extravaganza? Not possible to pull off, one would think but my friend is always prepared. There's are numerous party dresses, always cleaned and ready to wear in her closet. Her hair stylist makes house calls. Simple but elegant appetizer recipes are in an organized folder in Dropbox so she can access ingredient lists on her phone while on the go. A case of champagne, a stocked bar and all of the other necessities for a fabulous time are always ready. So as she once again pulls off her sure to be fabulous party on a whim tonight, I'll marvel at her unreal organizational skills and continue to wonder if I could ever be the like her, the true hostess with the most-est.

Have you ever hosted a last minute party?

Color Craze: Farewell to Emerald

Images: top left, clockwise - EarringsNecklaceCoatGlassPaintingFashion,  DoorChair
A successor has been chosen, so as we say a reluctant farewell to Pantone's 2013 Color of the Year, Emerald, we revisit all of it's rich vibrancy. Whether incorporated into furniture, housewares or bringing life to a neutral outfit, it's a true color of elegance. I enjoy using the color in my handmade jewelry like the Green Envy Necklace and it was a best seller in our fashion jewelry collection. It's the perfect hue for any time of the year but it's so fashionable for the Holiday season. It's totally worthy of a head to toe look or you can adorn your favorite little black dress with a fabulous pair of statement earrings a la Angelina Jolie for New Year's Eve. While we'll move a bit of our focus to the brilliant Radiant Orchid in 2014, I'll always come back to the beauty of Emerald.

All You Need is Tea

Images from our Tea-ology board on Pinterest

The holidays are upon us. It seems to come earlier every year but I accept that the caffeine fueled days and nights that continue to be my way of life are here to stay. I love my thriving jewelry company but its frequent demands for my alert and undivided attention at times mean bypassing sleep, exercise and occasional meals. I may have sold my soul when I allowed coffee to become my remedy of choice for assistance in maneuvering through my crazy world. I’ll admit I fell hard for its notorious reputation for having an almost immediate impact on your psyche, for giving you a somewhat false sense of power, that blast of seemingly endless energy. But then there’s ultimately that dreaded crash….

There are times when I’m able to do everything the right way. I was in the midst of one of those rare moments a couple of weeks. I got 7-8 hours of sleep, I worked out consistently 5-6 mornings a week. I ate 3 balanced meals a day with 2 healthy, nutritious snacks. (OK, that one I may have slipped up on) I drank lots of great herbal and artisan teas for the wonderful taste and slightly less abrasive caffeine jolt. Upon awakening, I sipped a simple green tea with ginseng tea chaser. Mid-morning, I would indulge in a delightful cup of white tea. After lunch, a rich full bodied lapsang souchong would set a soothing tone to the rest of the work day. Bedtime would mean soothing chamomile blend.

And let’s not forget all of the recent medical news that includes glowing buzz words and phrases like antioxidants “could be filled with cancer-fighting ingredients”, “helps to prevent heart disease”. So I’m bringing tea back because in this exciting, insane and complicated world we live in, anything that helps to make sense of it all makes perfect sense to me.

Are you a tea drinker? Share your favorite teas below.

Color Craze: Hail to Holographics

Call me a lover of colors that come alive and give you something entirely different each time you gaze at them. I gravitate toward anything sparkly, shiny and chameleon-like. There's something striking and fashionably appealing about the disco ball colors and funky iridescence of Holographics and while this is not a trend that is necessarily flattering as a head-to-toe-look (think science fiction conventions), it's best suited for adding punch to neutrals like black or white.

Kick up your wardrobe a notch with a pencil leather skirt or a clutch for day. Go all out with a sheath dress, a-line mini or a mind-blowing tunic over leggings for evening. Add a touch of shimmer with a cocktail ring or cuff bracelet like ours from our Gemmy Jewels collection. Save the glittery eye shadow and manicure for the club. As with most bold trends, moderation is always appreciated.

October is a very special month. Not only is it the beginning of my favorite season, it's also the birthday month of a wonderful woman I call Mom. As a cancer survivor, my Mother has endured and our family will be forever grateful for the early detection and treatment she received from amazing medical professionals. October is also the month that my Dad lost his battle with this relentless and ravaging disease 2 years ago but this month will always be a time when we celebrate his incredible life and renew our efforts to do all we can to educate and help to fund efforts to eradicate its existence. We appreciate how brands have created pink items sold specifically for the cause of Breast Cancer Awareness. Some of our favorites are displayed above, and of course my company is thrilled to give back as well.
Whether directly or indirectly impacted by this deadly disease, one thing is for sure - cancer has touched us all. That's why we're excited to contribute to this important cause by donating 50% of proceeds from all KARMA Drop Earrings to breast cancer awareness and research. (We will spread support among several organizations. Contact us to receive our complete charitable donation list.) In addition, our special Power of Pink Bracelet to benefit the amazing American Breast Cancer Foundation is available now on eBay.

Help us assist in eradicating cancer once and for all.

Dream Denim

Burberry Brit Denim Jacket, Isabel Marant Fall 2013 Collection, Christian Louboutin Loafers
While watching some of the live streams of the Spring 2014 Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week runway shows last week, I recalled trends I saw for this current season. Denim appeared on a few runways and it was done to perfection. The durable material shown most commonly in its traditional blue hue, is one of those tricky fabrics that you either love or hate. Dressed up or down, I'm of the belief that when it's worn right and of the best quality your money can buy, it can be an incredibly versatile AND luxurious wardrobe staple.

Think beyond jeans. Pencil skirts, tailored jackets, fierce shoes and handbags are all fashionable players in the denim game. Don't be afraid to do double denim (top & bottom). Just mix the washes like here or kick it up a notch with separates in other colors. Add little pretties like our Blue Blaze Earrings for an extra special touch!

Color Craze: Burgundy!

Cabernet, Bordeaux, Merlot. Red wines are the perfect embodiment of one of my favorite Fall colors. Perhaps you heard it called Oxblood last year and the Crayola crayon box labels it as Maroon, but I think Burgundy is the perfect name for this sultry reddish-purple shade. I manage to find a way to incorporate this rich, robust hue into my looks as much as possible during the cooler seasons. It's become a neutral staple in my closet, much like midnight black and chocolate brown.
For the upcoming season, I'm seeing it in many different shapes and sizes — from luxe puffy coats and leather dresses to large shopper tote bags. You can choose to accessorize with a graphic scarf, a sleek bootie or with a touch the gemstone, Garnet as seen in my Un Ensemble de Trois Earrings, below.

Interesting fact: This color is best worn while sipping an actual glass of red wine.

The Contemporary Bride

Fresh. Sophisticated. Modern. The Contemporary Bride is all of these and more. She's supremely polished with an eye for clean lines and sophisticated airiness, but there's a soft, romantic side to her. She loves sleek elegance. Filling space just for the sake of it is not her style. There's something sublimely sacred about openness and anything that allows love and light to shine though.

While her wedding colors may be muted or neutral, they are alive with bright simplicity. Her wedding jewelry may be minimalist but it's charm and chicness match her perfectly tailored matte wedding gown, perhaps with no veil. It's all in the details for this bride, like the clear symmetry of the Alana Bracelet or the near-perfect alignment of Pearls in the Giselle Necklace or any of the other bridal jewelry shown below. Pure and simple.

Trend Spotting: Animal Prints

Images: (top left, clockwise) Envelope Clutch, Lips and Nails, Alexander McQueen Clutch, DVF Suit, Gucci Opera Gloves
I never thought the fervor over animal prints in fashion would last. But it's stronger than it's ever been for Fall 2013. It's been seen on the runways during Fashion Week on everything from calf skin boots to nail polish, bomber jackets to evening gowns. Beautiful to look at but often difficult to wear, you can choose to drape yourself in it head to toe (please don't, unless you wear it like this), select one main item like a skirt or a top, or you can select an accessory or two to compliment neutral colors for a sophisticated look.

My Holiday 2013 Jewelry Collection will feature a few necklaces and earrings in this dramatic trend, like #4 the Animale Necklace in the style board below plus some fabulous metals that mix and match perfectly with animal prints. New items will preview online in our Bauble Lounge and will be available exclusively at our Private Trunk Shows beginning November 6.

Color Craze: CARNIVAL!

Images: top left, clockwise: ConfettiChristopher Kane DressSea Glass
Fun doesn't even begin to describe the colors of the celebration of Carnival. Held every year across the globe around February, it is a non-stop party filled with over the top excitement. The fashion trend cycle will inevitably return to the bright, rainbow color combinations associated with this festive time but I've never been one to wait for trends. Since I seem to naturally gravitate toward vivid hues, my jewelry collections have often included bright primary and eye-popping neon colors.

Fear not, these thrilling colors can be worn in every day life. The "less is more" rule definitely applies but you can be creative. While it takes an adventurous soul to wear this trend head to toe, feel free to liven a neutral look with accessories like a neon clutch, a vivid pair of heels or a dash of brightly colored jewelry like pieces shown below from my classic collection available at my online shop.

Fall 2013 - Mixed Metals Inspirations

Images: (top left, clockwise) HematitePencilsCrystalScratched MetalMetal ShoeGray Skyline

You would think that by naming my new Fall 2013 Collection, Mixed Metals which launches today, July 31, that you would perhaps see lots of combinations of steel, aluminum, gold or silver. But actually the name came from my love of the various shades of gray we find all around us. Metal architecture, No. 2 graphite pencils, looks from the Fashion Week runways, a gray sky right before a rainstorm are all things that have true texture and show the many dimensions of the color. I was inspired to create jewelry that reflected the mixture of those textures commonly associated with gray and silver metal and also seen in the way light shines off a silver platter, the beauty in an ornate metal doorway and the smooth, sleek texture of Hematite.

Shop select items from my new Collection by becoming a JulRe Designs Insider. You can shop the entire collection at our popular Private Trunk Shows.

Blossoms for Lunch

Image: Heed the Hedonist
This week we're celebrating Flower Power on our Facebook page and we've immersed ourselves in floral prints, museum plant collections and jewelry in bloom. So when we discovered a few lovely recipes for edible flower dishes, I knew I had to share.

I can't say that consuming flowers was ever in my culinary consciousness but after reading an article about the history of eating blooms, the health benefits and that allayed some obvious safety concerns, I was excited about entertaining my palate with new flavors. I'm on the hunt for some green-thumbed individual and when I find them, I'll be grilling a great piece of Salmon and making this salad as an accompaniment for my next lunch.

Trend Spotting: Flower Power!

Images: (top left, clockwise) Flowers, Floral Pumps via SheFinds, Chairs,
Wedding Cake via Cake Power, Maxi Dress
This trend nearly passed me by. While floral prints have always been a fashion classic, I never quite bought into them being incorporated into anything other than little girl's dresses (cute) or kitchen curtains (kitschy). But this Spring's runways ushered them into the season in so many modern, feminine ways. From the patterned pump to the strategic placement of strong prints for an ultra slimming effect, florals have been pumped up and updated. The prints are also being seen on home furnishings and brides, typically a place where florals of the living kind are highlighted, you will find this trend used in very unique ways.

Taking florals from the Spring and Summer seasons into Fall is a breeze as my Style Board below illustrates. My best advice is to wear one item at a time in this trend to avoid flower power overload. Make florals your own by adding some gorgeous gemstone cluster jewelry in bright colors like my Lemon Tree Earrings and my Field Greens Necklace. Lovely!

Color Craze: True Neutrals

Pantone, the authorities on all things color say that Neutrals are back. So....when did they leave? It's entirely conceivable that I may have missed the memo but Neutral colors have always been an ample staple in my wardrobe as well as in the jewelry I design. A natural palette immediately elicits a sense of calm and balance. I believe it's why many homeowners choose to use the softness and versatility of neutral colors on walls and in furnishings in rooms where a peacefulness is desired.

In fashions, neutrals literally go with everything. When you pair a neutral with a bright, vibrant color in the neon family, for instance, the look takes on a fun, modern twist. Likewise, dark and neutral colors wear well together for more confident, sophisticated looks. The Color Craze Style Board below highlights a few of my favorite Neutral fashions and accessories for the Summer season like Gemmy Jewels Bangle Bracelets and the versatile Sandy Beach Necklace. The Classic Bride

Images: (top left. clockwise) Wedding Cake, Wedding Bouquet, JulRe Designs Bridal Earrings, Wedding Gown, Wedding Invitations, Jimmy Choo Pump, President and First Lady Obama Wedding, JulRe Designs Bridal Pearl Necklace
She appreciates tradition. Her mother's white wedding gown and veil may be what she chooses to wear on her important day. Luxury in simplicity is her trademark. She's not complicated, nor does she want her wedding to be. Yet she desires an event that's sophisticated and elegant, with just enough pomp but little circumstance. She is The Classic Bride

A strand of ivory pearls, either antique or custom made. Besides her charming wedding rings, an exquisite pair diamond stud earrings or a small cluster of sparkling, translucent crystals are all the jewelry this bride will need to compliment her timeless ensemble. Designing for this bride is an exceptional experience because she wants her jewelry to become heirlooms, pieces to be passed on to classic brides for generations to come.

Color Craze: Turquoise and Chocolate

Images: (top left, clockwise) Moroccan Dunes Necklace, Fabric, Leather Street Bags, Bedding. Cupcakes
The deliciousness of my latest Color Craze is quite evident, I think. Turquoise and Chocolate are a combo that evoke icy cool, rich warmth and syrupy sweet sentiments all at once. It's a color duo that works well in your wardrobe for all seasons and who can't appreciate a colorful baked good for a tasty treat.

I've used smooth, stabilized Turquoise and dark brown Tiger-eye gemstones in many of my jewelry designs because the combo looks fabulous on almost any skin tone plus it's perfect for accessorizing a look in the same color family as well as neutrals like white, beige and gold. The Turquoise and Chocolate style board below is a great Summer look for weekend shopping or dinner at an outdoor bistro. The Moroccan Dunes Necklace and Burnished Sizzle Earrings add a chic factor!

Philadelphia Freedom

The City of Brotherly Love is where I will call home beginning in September 2013. The JulRe Designs Studio has moved from our beloved Jersey City, NJ where the jewelry magic all began to our new love, Center City Philadelphia, PA. I've been coming to this great place for many years to co-host private jewelry trunk shows and work with custom design clients.  I've been a huge fan of Philly fashion, with its effortless style and easy blend of comfort with just the right amount of glam.

This summer on the streets of funky Northern Liberties to swanky Rittenhouse Square, I've been seeing layered, lightweight tank tops, flashes of neon and fashionable flats. My style board (above) highlights some of my favorite looks plus I've added a few must-have accessories including bangle bracelets from Gemmy Jewels on eBay and stiletto earrings from my recently relaunched shop on Etsy. Pretty fashions for Philly and beyond!

The Avant Garde Bride

The bride who is anything but traditional or classic. The one where convention plays no role in her everyday life. The woman who takes pride in being unique - that's The Avant Garde Bride. Her style is eclectic. She wants that extra special gasp and desires to leave a lasting impact when she walks down the aisle. I love designing jewelry for her because she's full of unusual, sometimes over-the-top ideas. I'm fortunate enough to be working with a few for the Fall/Winter 2013 season and it's always a wonderful opportunity to try some things that aren't particularly practical but tremendous fun to collaborate on. That's one of the pleasure of creating something for this ultra original woman.

The black and white color palette with a pop of vibrant, true red shown in the inspiration board above is a wonderful way to show off your originality on your wedding day. Having your bridal jewelry custom designed especially for you is a surefire way to assure you have a one-of-a-kind look for your extra special day.

Color Craze: Tropical Brights

Ready for Spring and Summer? I know I may be pushing the seasonal envelope with this post but since I design my jewelry collections on a similar schedule as the fashion industry, I've been in hot weather mode since the Fall. The inspiration board for my Summer 2013 collection {above) is filled with the tropical color influences that I'm looking forward to sharing with you in May and I can't wait to wear the bright, sultry colors associated with warm breezes, lush rain forests and island living. Now, let's see about booking that trip to Fiji.....

Love Bites

We have yet to decide if we're going to enjoy an evening of fine dining in New York City for Valentine's Day this year or if we'll settle in at home and cook a romantic meal together.  Over the years we've enjoyed the pleasures of both but no matter where we choose to partake in the annual ritual of feasting on the Meal of Love, dessert will be served at home and homemade.

While chocolate is the go-to sweet treat most commonly associated with the holiday, I'm leaning toward something less traditional this time.

Mixed Berry Mousse & GelĂ©e Verrines from Hungry Cravings
I found this delectable Mixed Berry Mousse recipe on a respected food blog a couple of years ago and it has been my secret weapon when I need to impress guests or serve something relatively simple yet elegant. My significant other puts it high on his request list so I make it often enough to consider myself a bit of an expert. So I say, don't let the preparation of the puree defeat you. This dish is well worth the effort. It's the perfect ending to a sweet day.
